Picking the Right Mobility Vehicle

A mobility vehicle is an important part of the healing process both physically and emotionally for many individuals with disabilities. Being able to choose a vehicle that can help them travel around helps restore a sense of independence. These vehicles are designed to make it easier for disabled people to get themselves and their wheelchair or other type of transportation into a motor vehicle. At one time there was only one type of vehicle that a disabled person could choose from to convert into a wheelchair van. Now there are many different models and makes that can help the disabled travel safely, comfortably, and with style.

The first part of choosing a mobility vehicle is picking out what type of vehicle you want to purchase. You can choose from full size vans, minivans, SUVs, and even some types of trucks can have mobility equipment installed in them. Many different styles in each of these vehicle types exist, so disabled individuals have a lot of choices to pick from. Having choices allows the individual to express themselves and their tastes, which gives a person the feeling of freedom.

Another important choice you will need to make is whether to buy a new or used mobility vehicle. Examine your current financial situation and set up a budget for how much money you have available to spend. Setting up a budget will be a determining factor in deciding whether or not you should get a new or used vehicle. New vehicles are a lot more expensive, as you will need to buy the vehicle and also pay for mobility equipment and installation. Used wheelchair vehicles are often much more affordable and the lifts or ramps are already installed. Used vehicles are usually only a year or so old and the mobility equipment, although used, is often newer technology that has been recently developed. Contact your local dealer and discuss the options you have for financing your vehicle purchase.

If you decide to go with a used mobility vehicle, you should obtain a copy of the vehicle history report before finalizing your purchase. This report will tell you about who has previously owned the vehicle as well as if the vehicle has ever been in an accident or needed major repairs. Always do a fair amount of research on a vehicle before you buy it. This will prevent you from buying a vehicle that may not be safe to travel in.
