Tips for Buying Mobility Vans

Mobility vans are vehicles that are designed to make transportation easier and safer for those in wheelchairs.  An accessible van comes with special features that allow the wheelchair passenger better mobility.  Those who must be in wheelchairs will appreciate the improved mobility that accessible vehicles offer.  Riding in a standard car can be dangerous because it is difficult to get in and out.  Mobility vans provide a method of getting in and out of the van in a safe manner.

When buying mobility vans you can choose between two main types including full size and minivans.  It is possible for disabled drivers to gain independence by driving their own accessible vehicle.  You’ll want to consider a few things when shopping for mobility vans.  The van should be outfitted with the features and options that make driving easier.  This will greatly improve your mobility options by allowing you to more easily get to and from the store, the doctor, and other places where you want to go.

The most important feature that is necessary to improve mobility is the wheelchair ramp or lift.  The ramp is designed to fold out of the open van door so that the wheelchair can be pushed into the vehicle.  One drawback of the ramp is that it requires someone with some strength or agility to assist in using it.  If this isn’t a problem, the ramp is an affordable option for entry to the vehicle.

A wheelchair lift is an easier option for entry to the van.  The lift is a mechanical device that can be installed permanently on either the rear or side door of the van.  The advantage of using a lift is that it can provide a way for the disabled passenger to enter the vehicle without having to get out of the wheelchair.  The lift is lowered to the ground where the wheelchair rolls onto it and locks in place.  Then the lift is raised to allow the wheelchair to safely enter the van.

The wheelchair lift can be operated with a simple button or lever, making it easy for anyone to do.  In fact, the driver who is disabled can easily get in and out of the van alone using the lift.   Special driver controls can be added to allow the disabled driver to use their hands to control the vehicle.  Other special features are also available to make the ride for a disabled driver or passenger comfortable and safe.
